Description
The Deaf community experiences domestic and sexual violence at significantly higher rates and survivors often face numerous barriers that hinder their ability to seek help. Additionally, those who are part of immigrant and asylee communities encounter more complex challenges due to co-occurring intersectional barriers, as well as gaps in services. When Deaf survivors reach out for assistance and find their needs unmet, they experience retraumatization by the very systems and services designed to support them. Many service providers lack the necessary training to effectively respond to and support the unique needs of this community. To help professionals working in domestic violence and sexual assault programs, law enforcement, and healthcare providers, we are offering a two-part webinar series. This series will provide essential information into the unique challenges faced by Deaf survivors and present strategies to more effectively serve this community. Part 1 Join us for part one of this webinar series, Introduction to Working with Deaf Survivors. DeAnna Swope, Senior Program Associate at Activating Change, will share vital information on how to provide survivors with accessible support and solutions to address their needs and the challenges and barriers they encounter. Part 2 Part two of this webinar series, Supporting Deaf Immigrant and Refugee Survivors, presented by Diana Pryntz, Executive Director of the Deaf Refugee Advocacy Center. Diana will provide participants with valuable information on how to support Deaf Immigrant and Refugee Survivors. This webinar will focus on how to best support Deaf immigrant and refugee survivors, connect with advocates, services and support, along with inclusion into the Deaf community, while at the same time, retaining their culture.
